Why chemical cluster in West Pomeranian Region?
• chemical industry concentration in the region (fertilizers, plastics, rubber, chemicals) – Police Chemical Plant and number of SMEs (Police is a name of the city in the region),
• Police Industrial Park INFRAPARK, which offers facilitated zones for chemical investments,
• upcoming investments: harbour for LNG vessels and Brigdestone Europe in the region,
• good location (logistics centers, harbors, short distance Germany and Scandinavian countries),
• 3 regional universities with Faculties of chemical technologies (Szczecin University of Technology, Koszalin University of Technology, Szczecin Academy of Agriculture) and West Pomeranian Centre of Advanced Technologies,
• cluster initiative managed by consortia of Szczecin University of Technology, Northern Chamber of Commerce and INFRAPARK Police which results in:
- a network of enterprises, research institutes and regional authorities,
- series of networking workshops, trainings, brokerage events,
- statistical and qualitative (strengths, weaknesses, barriers) mapping of the cluster,
- formulation of cluster development strategy,
- establishing a website for chemical industry in the region containing: technology profiles, events, regional potential, European Funds, databases www.chemia.rsi.org.pl
- cooperation agreement between 10 enterprises and Szczecin University of Technology concerning future cooperation within cluster initiative,
- established cooperation with Marshal Office, West Pomeranian RDA, Z Ch Police - Police Chemical Plant (leader in chemical sector in the region),
• foresight exercise in chemical industry launched under INTRO project (6th FP)– our lead expert in this process is Arnold Verbeek from Idea Consult (Brussels), author of the report “Chemical Industry in Flanders – Towards 2010”,
• participation of regional actors in Technology Platforms concerning chemistry,
The West Pomeranian chemical industry along with shipbuilding, timber and furniture and tourist industries constitute the leading and most promising part of the Region’s economy. It is considered to be one of the most important potentials for economic development in West Pomerania since there is a heavy, comparing to other Polish regions, concentration of companies producing phosphoric (65,3% of the total production in Poland) and nitric fertilizers (18,2%) observed. 10% of the employed in industry of the Region, i.e. 8 500 people, worked in the chemical trade in 2005. There are over 350 chemical companies located in the Region cooperating with additional 250 both in Poland and abroad. West Pomeranian Region itself offers a good institutional, scientific and R&D support infrastructure in the form of public and private universities in Szczecin and Koszalin educating professionals and developing new solutions for industry. West Pomeranian Centre of Advanced Technologies leaded by Szczecin University of Technology offers additional and fundamental support aiming at coordinating innovative R&D activities and application of their results.
Szczecin University of Technology together with Police Industrial Park – INFRAPARK and Northern Chamber of Commerce have initiated formation of a chemical cluster in the Region within a project called ‘Developing Regional Innovation System’.
Workshops and seminars for the chemical trade run from February 2006 to May 2007 aimed at showing to entrepreneurs profits of cooperation and experience exchange. Meanwhile work on creating a development strategy for a chemical cluster in the Region began, which resulted in elaborating the Strategy now available on the website www.rsi.chemia.org.pl. More than 40 companies are currently engaged in the cluster initiative thanks to regularly held meetings between businessmen, scientists and representatives of public administration and business support institutions. 14 of the companies, among others Police Chemical Plant S.A., Fosfan S.A., Kemipol Sp. z o.o., have signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation with Szczecin University of Technology. Local government units and business-related organizations make additional contribution to the promotion of the chemical cluster and all the activities are performed under the auspices of Marshal of the Westpomeranian Region.
Among the actions performed for the benefit of chemical industry organisations are first of all meetings of representatives of the industry intended to stimulate joint ventures and services on the regional market, counselling services involving financing of innovation, cooperation meetings, lobbying for the benefit of the industry and promotion of the companies from the Region during international fair both in Poland and abroad. Additional emphasis was put upon promotion of the cluster initiative in the press, radio and television, which resulted in better understanding for the cluster idea among both companies and inhabitants of the Region.
The entrepreneurs associated in the cluster established in June 2007 an association ‘Green Chemical’, which is intended to enable closer cooperation, more efficient product distribution and easier access to the new UE funds. Although the association has been founded by 20 entrepreneurs, currently it has 30 active members of the chemical industry from the whole West Pomeranian Region of Poland.
Additionally an Internet website www.chemia.org.pl has been launched, where news and curious details regarding the trade events, trends, technologies, quality systems, funds and services offered by business support institutions and universities can be found. There is also a database available on the website including technological offers, CV’s of potential employees and work offers
We are welcome you to cooperation!
